How to Resurrect the God We Killed

I want to explore something that once stood as one of the greatest blocks on my magical path: the concept of God-worship embedded into almost every sacred text and ritual. For many of us on the path of magick, especially those who have walked this for years, the religious undertones in ceremonial magick, especially the constant glorification and supplication, can feel jarring—disempowering, even.

“The unconscious doesn’t just store your shadows—it is the divine architect of your entire reality.”

“You’re not here to find yourself. You’re here to define yourself.”

Keys Insights and takeways
  1. God as the Unconscious Mind
Reframing “God” as the unconscious allows for a non-dogmatic, psychologically integrated spiritual practice rooted in self-awareness and personal transformation.

  2. Ritual as Reprogramming
The glorification found in sacred texts isn’t submission—it’s neural entrainment. Ritual is drama designed to speak in the language of the unconscious, shaping identity and behavior.

  3. Magic Is Not Escape, But Responsibility
True magic isn’t outsourcing power to spirits or grimoires—it’s reclaiming your sovereignty by accepting full authorship of your inner mythos and its impact on outer reality.

  4. Supplication Transformed into Self-Honoring
Ancient devotional language can be repurposed to honor the “divine spark” within, realigning belief systems and emotional states to support growth and sovereignty.

  5. Active Imagination as Divine Dialogue
Imagining gods, spirits, or inner archetypes becomes a method of direct communication with the psyche—an internalized initiatory path that requires self-honesty and symbolic literacy.

  6. The Limits of Language and Symbols
Symbols only hold power relative to one’s associations. The secret name of God is only potent if the unconscious has been prepared to respond to it.

  7. Psycho-Spiritual Integration Is the Key
Without healing the psyche—its trauma, shame, and repression—spiritual or magical work remains ineffective. Inner harmony determines outer manifestation.

  8. All Magick Is Somatic
The rituals we perform should be felt in the soma—the body. Ecstasy, joy, and sacred transformation are not ideas—they are visceral, embodied experiences.

“Magic isn’t about begging spirits for power—it’s about reprogramming your unconscious to realize you already have it.”

“As above, so below. As within, so about—the inner world mirrors the outer because it writes the code.”

Let’s start by painting a familiar scene.

Imagine it: an ancient grimoire lies open before you. You’ve fasted, purified, set the incense, aligned the hour to the planetary correspondence, laid out the circle and tools perfectly. You stand, the air charged, and begin the rite. Then suddenly, you’re commanded to intone grand phrases like “Praise be to He who was before the world and shall remain after the world ends!”

You may feel the contradiction rise within you. Why is the empowered magician suddenly bowing in supplication? Why is glorification necessary?

This dynamic—the glorification of God—is one of the strongest remnants of Christian influence upon Western magickal texts. But perhaps there’s a deeper function. What if, instead of simply abandoning it, we reframed it entirely?

In the occult world, we speak of the God behind the God. The divine essence veiled behind personified deities. In many traditions, such as those surrounding the Shemhamphorash, we see 72 angelic aspects of divine force—each expressing a facet of cosmic intelligence. In truth, these are not all-powerful personalities floating in the clouds. They are archetypal interfaces between your consciousness and a deeper, universal field.

And what is that field?

Your unconscious mind.

Let’s go deeper.

Everything you perceive—my voice, these words, this moment—is filtered through your neurology, through your personal references and associative memory. That filtering process creates your reality. It’s not the world itself—it’s your interpretation of it.

And here’s the punch: your unconscious governs the majority of your experience. That’s not metaphor. That’s neuroscience. If your unconscious believes something, your conscious mind will experience it as real. That’s why you can hallucinate in hypnosis. That’s why you can stare directly at your keys and not see them.

So, what if all the ancient commands to glorify God were, in fact, hypnotic instructions? What if the liturgy, the chants, the spells, were not for some being in the sky—but for your own unconscious?

Imagine what happens when you declare: “Oh, how glorious are you, my God.” You rewire your neurology. You shift your internal identity. You entrain your soma—your energetic body—into alignment with greatness, power, and divinity.

In this frame, God is not “out there.” God is the field of power, wisdom, memory, and creation that lives within you. God is your unconscious—and your unconscious is the builder of your reality.

So, glorifying “God” is not spiritual subservience. It’s neurological conditioning.

Magic, then, becomes somatic drama—ritual theater designed to reshape your unconscious mind. The incense, the candles, the words—they’re programming language. The spells are self-written scripts for new states of being.

That’s why Crowley spoke of inflaming oneself with prayer. That’s why the Psalms have power—not because of dogma, but because of entrainment.

The unconscious doesn’t respond to intellect. It responds to feeling. That’s why you can’t logic your way out of trauma. You have to re-imprint your nervous system. You have to rewire your mythology. You must become the author of your own sacred text.

You must glorify the divine within you.

This isn’t about arrogance. It’s about sacred responsibility. The left-hand path has always said “no gods, no masters.” Not because there is no divine, but because you are the locus of power. You are the microcosm. As above, so below. As within, so without.

So glorify yourself—not your ego, not your shadow, but the sacred force within you. Glorify your unconscious. Rewrite its code. Feed it the myth of your joy, your freedom, your sovereignty. That is the path of the true magician. That is what it means to live deliciously.

Before proceeding, please acknowledge and accept our formal position. We do not accept the models proposed by various occult groups that portray angels or demons as abstract beings with agency or will of their own. Rather, we view them purely as representations of the practitioner’s individual psyche. We also regard the reasons for their changes over time and the similarities between cultures as evidence of a shared human unconscious, referred to by Jung as the collective unconscious.

This means it is not “the devil” that makes people do harmful things; people alone are responsible for their actions. When someone has an unhealthy relationship with these parts of the psyche, their experience can become distorted. They may require professional therapy and the guidance of a mental health professional; otherwise, they risk taking these powers of the unconscious to a dark place because those parts have been corrupted by misinformation, trauma, or both.

Our position is that each person is the ruler of their own kingdom/reality, and that spirit has no interest in human affairs and is not subject to an ego.

Accordingly, our interpretation of occult systems—from the Tree of Life and Tree of Death to the Goetia and Shem—is purely symbolic. We treat them through the IFS (Internal Family Systems) model as representational frameworks that illustrate splits within the human psyche, and we work with them in a manner similar to “duality therapy.”

Therefore, any person claiming that a spirit instructed them to do X or Y is expressing a cry for help and should be treated as such.

This is why this movement is clearly marked by the identifier “God Is Not Therapy.” We are not here to provide therapy, but to present a model of these forces and practices for the purpose of understanding, navigating, and working with one’s own unconscious. By proceeding, you acknowledge your responsibility to seek professional assistance if you are experiencing any of these issues before continuing with this work.
